On Saturday 20 June, 54 “Junior Trailblazers” from St Martin’s Church of England Junior School, Epsom, successfully completed a 25km hike from Leith Hill to Epsom in support of HSEEB and the School’s PTFA, raising a stunning total of more than £7000 for HSEEB.
In preparation for their ambitious challenge, the Trailblazers completed five training walks between April and June. The practice walks increased steadily in difficulty and length:
- walks 1 and 2: 8km on Epsom Common on Sunday 19 and again on Saturday 25 April
- walks 3 and 4: 11km on Box Hill and Leith Hill on Sunday 10 May, followed by 11km across Horton Country Park on Saturday 23 May
- walk 5: a 16km loop starting at Headley Heath on Sunday 7 June.
On the day itself, the children battled heat, pollen and pre-existing injuries, all while supporting each other to reach their goal.
The hike took in some fantastic scenes from across the Surrey Hills, with stops in the beautiful locations of Westcott village, Denbies Wine Estate, and Langley Vale Centenary Wood, before finishing back in the playground of St Martin’s School after an epic 9 hours of walking.
